Winchester City 5 - 1 Wincanton Town
Winchester City strolled into the next round of the FA Cup home to Wincanton Town on Saturday 29th August 2015 to face Swindon Supermarine, away in their next tie.
Before the match both teams, officials and supporters stood in a minute's silence in memory of the Shoreham air disaster. Winchester City also carried out a bucket collection in aid of the victims' families and raised the generous sum of just over £300.
Because City had no real knowledge of Wincanton's play as they had never met before, both sides made a rather cagey start but in the 12th minute Geoff Dunn chipped the ball over 'keeper Taylor, following a neat three-man passing move.
The early goal unsettled Wincanton and in the next attack they failed to clear and allowed Warren Bentley to get in a shot which unfortunately hit the post. Bentley came close again a few minutes later but on this occasion he rolled the ball just wide of the far post.
The visitors were not out of the game, however, a good tackle by Rob Flooks broke up a promising attack and the City's 'keeper, Brendon Norris was called into action to make a diving save.
Close to half time Dunn came close when he dropped a shot onto the top of the net but City were not to be denied and a corner taken by Danny King was collected by Zac Glasspool who slipped it back to him as King outpaced the defence to cross for Flooks to head home in the 47th minute.
City started the second half on the attack when after two attempts Wincanton failed to clear their lines the ball rebounded to Glasspool after Matt Benham's original shot and he bundled it into an empty with the 'keeper floundering and off his line (50th minute).
In the 53rd minute it looked as if Wincanton had managed to get back in the game when Norris made a hash of a punched clearance and allowed Andy Mitchell to score from close range. Although the Referee was on the point of awarding a goal he noticed the Assistant's flag and after a lengthy consultation over ruled his own decision and gave 'off-side'.
Three up and cruising City could have gone further ahead through Bentley. He dribbled his way into the box and then shot over the bar and then tried to screw a shot in from an acute angle and hit the outside of the post.
With the tie pretty safe, Manager Paul Masters made a change in the 60th minute resting Jake Newton and replacing him by Luke Benali and in the 67th made another change, Taz Roberts coming on for Dunn.
Glasspool set up City's fourth in the 71st minute when he laid the ball back for Jamie Barron to hit an accurate shot, giving the 'keeper no chance.
Three minutes later Bentley made it 5-0, glancing the ball home from Flooks’s powerful header deep into the box.
Despite the game being completely lost Wincanton did not give up and scored a consolation in the 80th minute when Norris was caught too far off his line and Matt White scored from close range after a run by Jaimie Jordan.
Harrison Fay was given the last last few minutes of play replacing Glasspool and he nearly scored but hit the underside of the crossbar only to see the ball bounce out.
