Winchester City 1 - 5 Didcot Town

on Thu 7 Jan

The match between the F A Vase winners of 2003/04 and 2004/05 both of whom beat AFC Sudbury in the final, saw Didcot end Winchester’s unbeaten home record with a comfortable 5-1 victory. Didcot are currently in mid-table, but reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup where they lost to Exeter City in a televised match.

Winchester were without Lee Mills and played Taz Roberts with Matt Benham on the bench. However they made a terrible start with Luke Carnell heading home a cross in the 5th minute, and two minutes later the ball was not cleared and the Didcot captain scored his second goal of the game.  Brendan Norris then had to rush from his goal to beat a Didcot player to the ball.

Winchester then tried hard to get back in the game with Warren Bentley having a shot blocked and Zach Glasspool having an effort tipped round the post for a corner.  At the other end George Jeacock forced a save from Norris, but generally in the first half Winchester gave the ball away too easily and did not mark well.

Josh Dutton-Black who was a threat to Winchester all evening set up Graham Edney, a player who first played for Didcot in 2002 to score his team’s 3rd goal 10 minutes into the second half and effectively end the game as a contest.

Substitute George Reid then came on for his Didcot debut and soon made an impact scoring his team’s fourth with a cracking shot after being set up by Dutton-Black.  Another strike by Reid made it 5-0 with 10 minutes remaining, and if anything the visitors looked more likely to score again with Norris the busier goalkeeper.

Warren Bentley scored with the last kick of the game, but it was scant consolation in what was generally a poor Winchester performance.
