Winchester City 1 - 2 Weymouth
City were eliminated from the F A Trophy by a Weymouth team who currently lie fourth place in the Southern League Premier Division and are twice quarter finalists in the competition having entered every year since it started.
The one change from Wednesday's heroic win against North Leigh saw Adam Roberts returning from suspension replacing Bouwe Bosma.
After a slow start to the game Winchester forced Weymouth goalkeeper Jason Matthews into making good saves from Adam Roberts and Warren Bentley, in both cases tipping the ball around the post for a corner and Winchester had a couple of other half chances where they would have been disappointed not to have tested Matthews. At the other end it was the turn of Brendan Norris to tip an effort from Ben Thomas round the post for a corner.
In the 31st minute Warren Bentley gave Winchester the lead following a goalmouth scramble with goalkeeper Jason Matthews indicating that he did not feel the ball had crossed the line. At the end of the half Weymouth had a strong penalty claim for handball turned down.
However Weymouth drew level right at the start of the second half through Dean Evans, and although Jason Matthews had to save from Zach Glasspool and made an excellent double save from first Glasspool and then Jamie Barron, Weymouth looked the team most likely to score with Norris making saves from Thomson and Jardan Copp and they took the lead midway through the half when Adam Kelly set up Copp.
After that although they used all three substitutes Winchester never really looked likely to get back in the game with the visitors holding on to the ball well and keeping the home defence on their toes. The home side were reduced to 10 men in the dying seconds when defender Danny King was dismissed.
In truth although both teams had played on Wednesday, the exertions of that game did appear to have an effect on Winchester during the latter stages of that game.
