Win City (3 - 1) Newport IOW

on Sat 20 Sep

City climbed above their opponents, Newport, on Saturday 21st September 2014 to 7th place in the league with a very competent win over a strong side.

It was Newport who made the early play winning two corners but failing to take advantage of either.

Warren Bentley was the first City forward to penetrate the Newport defence but he put his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. He then worked the ball to Zach Glasspool but he mis-hit his shot when well placed.

As City began to put together their passing game Newport were finding it difficult to contain the pace on the flanks from Dominic Cope and Mike McEnery. Cope floated in a cross for Glasspool to touch-on to Bentley but his shot was well cleared.

City's break came in the 32nd minute when Chris Mason sent in a long cross field ball which McEnemy did well to control and as the 'keeper came off his line he curved in around him into the empty net.

The goal gave City to impetus they needed and a skilful pass from Glasspool set up Bentley but the Newport goalkeeper saved with his legs. As City pressed, Leigh Mills had a shot kicked off the line and then put a header over the bar. Mills then put in a cross for Luke Dempsey also to head just over the bar.

The second half opened with another chance. Mason lobbed a free kick into the area and Glasspool headed over the bar. A few minutes later a snap shot from Bentley went wide.

In a rare Newport attack Jason Collins was called in action in the City goal to make a good save.

City went two-up in the 64th minute. Cope intercepted a ball out of the the Newport defence and the rebound fell to Glasspool who cleverly worked his way into the box to send Bentley on his way. He rounded the 'keeper and rolled the ball home.

Joe Wright crossed and McEnery scooped the ball goalwards but the 'keeper saved well.

Glasspool was rested in the 78th minute to be replaced by Geoff Dunn.

City wrapped up the points in the 80th minute when Cope cut the ball back for McEnemy to hit the post, the ball rebounded off the Newport 'keeper's legs and into the net.

Cope and Adam Tomasso were substituted in the 85th minute being replaced by Adam Roberts and Ryan Holloway and the move nearly paid off when Roberts hit the side netting when a fourth goal looked on the cards.

The game ended in a bit of a farce when Mills and Dempsey, who both had great games, played pass the ball with Collins in their own penalty box. All three had an opportunity to boot it upfield but eventually only to lose it and present an easy task for Newport to score a consolation goal in the 90th minute.

City: Jason Colins, Adam Tomasso, Joe Wright, Ben Stanbrook, Leigh Mills, Luke Dempsey, Mike McEnery, Chris Mason, Zach Glasspool, Warren Bentley, Dominic Cope, Liam Green, Ross Casey, Geoff Dunn, Adam Roberts and Ryan Holloway.
