Win City (3 - 0) Bemerton HH

on Sun 14 Sep

City's place in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup was secured after 13 minutes on Saturday 13th September as they built a three-goal lead never to be threatened for the rest of the match.

It took Winchester only five minutes to find the goal when Warren Bentley whipped in a cross and Mike McEnery headed it powerfully into the back of the net.

They went further ahead in the 11th minute when Bentley forced the Bemerton 'keeper, Frampton, into a save but the ball rebound straight to Chris Mason who whipped it home from close range.

The killer blow was struck in the 13th minute when Mason went on a great individual run, threading his way through the box to see his shot rebound from the 'keeper only for him to follow up and knock home with ease.

Mason came close to scoring again a few minutes later but the 'keeper got his hand to the ball and nearly gave McEnery a chance but his diving run just missed the diverted ball.

Just before half time Zach Glasspool brought another save from the 'keeper and then Bentley hit the post.

Despite being outclassed Bemerton did show just after half time, they hit the City bar and subsequently forced Jason Collins into two good saves but that was all they could offer and spent the rest of the match on the defensive.

Just after the hour the City Managers made a triple substitution Green, McEnery and Dominic Cope came off and were replaced by Tazz Roberts back from injury, Geoff Dunn and Chris Manning.

City set up several more chances the best being when Dunn put in a good run and shot just wide of the post and Glasspool set up Roberts and he had his shot saved.

In a game of such domination City's defence were not stretched. The full backs, Adam Tomasso and Joe Wright were given the freedom to come forward and Leigh Mills and Luke Dempsey were twin giants among men as Bemerton failed to get past them. Green was outstanding in midfield.
