Winchester City crashed miserably out of the Vase on Saturday 1st November 2014 after being out thought and outplayed by Horndean.
The match turned on three early chances City failed to convert and once they were behind they failed to overcome the packed defence tactics that Horndean played so well. Zack Glassspool and Warren Bentley played lonely roles up front as City persisted in playing down the wings but time and again the last ball into the box was met by one of six or seven Horndean defenders and cleared.
City played the better football through out the game and created at least ten goal chances but failed to score with any of them.
A free kick by Glasspool gave new signing Scott Sampson an early chance but he headed wide and then Chris Mason put in a long-range shot which went just over the bar. It was Mason again who created another chance standing the ball up in the box for Glasspool who headed just wide.
With City pressing, they were hit by a break in the 16th minute when City's other new signing goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot, was off his line failing to get to a shot by Mark Smith. He later redeemed himself making three goalworthy saves before half time.
City only created one more chance before half time when Bentley slipped the ball to Glasspool and he laid it off for Dominic Cope to shoot wide.
City started the second half on the attack and Glasspool put a free kick over the bar.
Horndean hit again in the 56th minute against the run of play when Gary Austin increased their lead.
This goal prompted the Winchester manager Paul Masters into making a tactical change bringing off Mike McEnery to be replaced by Adam Roberts and he made an early impact with a penetrating run to put a header just round the post.
City nearly got back in the game when Ryan Holloway crossed for Stuart Green to hit the Horndean post.
On the hour Geoff Dunn came on for Cope and three minutes later Chris Mason was replaced by Chris Manning but unfortunately the substitutions did not greatly alter Winchester's play.
The killer blow was struck in the 75th minute when Alex Shepherd headed home for Horndean standing unmarked by the far post.
