Evesham Utd 1 - 0 Winchester City
Evesham's post match reported stated 'Winchester can count themselves unlucky not to have taken all three points'. I can endorse that! City defended well, created enough chances to win the game easily and overall dominated the match at the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium, Evesham on Saturday 22nd August 2015 but lost the match in the 92nd minute.
City started strongly with Zack Glasspool slipping the ball to Geoff Dunn who unfortunately shot straight at the 'keeper, Kevin Sawyer, who was to prove unbeatable all match. Dunn had another chance from a corner but angled his shot just wide.
Evesham did not put much pressure on the City defence and Jake Newton and Danny King at the back and centre half Jamie Thoroughgood, had plenty of time to work their way forward. The City midfield of George Short, Jaimie Barrow and Rob Flooks, likewise had the freedom to create.
Dan Cann hit the Evesham crossbar and them forced the 'keeper into a save.
A great double save by Sawyer, first from Glasspool and then from Dunn, kept the score at 0-0 at half time.
Dunn opened the second half with another chance for City but again he put the ball wide of the post with the 'keeper, struggling to get across.
At the other end Brendon Norris was caught off his line but the attack was cleared.
With Evesham's defence looking solid, City's Manager Paul Master, made a change in the 56th minute with Short being replaced by Micky Hubbard.
Soon after it was Dunn again who was in the mix after Newton had carved an opening for him and he was brought down in the box before shooting but the Referee waved away his penalty appeal.
Norris was brought into action when Evesham made a rare attack and he made a diving save from a powerful shot by Sean Wood.
In the 65th minute Matt Benham came on to replace Dunn who was tiring after a tremendous amount of work up-front.
City continued to press and Glasspool beat two defenders before laying off the ball to Taz Roberts, whose shot bounced off the 'keeper, who covered well. Roberts set up another chance for Cann and again the 'keeper made a good save.
With 90 minutes up, City seemed the relax thinking they had secured a point but paid the penalty. The Referee had the whistle in his mouth when Louis Mcrory, swept the ball home at the near post (92nd).
